Among those who contributed to shap- ing the history of locomotion was Enrico Pecori from Lombardy (1854-1941), who was fascinated by the new means of transport that were just beginning to appear in Italy. He was one of the first ‘velocipedists’ to ride on the roads of Milan and Lombardy, a founding member of the Unione Velocipedisti Italiani (Italian Velocipedists Union) and of the Touring Club, and it was probably this passion that led him to study the possibility of creating a small self-propelled vehicle. After two years of testing, Pecori suc- ceeded in completing his steam tricycle: it was equipped with a 2-cylinder hori- zontal engine with steam distribution by means of a flat box.
