1961 was a year of revolution for Formula 1: the new regulations mandated engines with a maximum displacement of 1.5 litres and a minimum weight of 450 kilograms. Ferrari also decided to undergo a significant redesign with the adoption of the rear engine. The Maranello staff, led by engineer Carlo Chiti, adapted to the new regulations updating the 65° V-shaped 6-cylinder engine called the ‘156 F2’. In fact, the latter changed to 120° with an overall dis- placement of 1477 cc, as well as a new lower and lighter engine with a shorter crankshaft that delivered more than 190 HP.
